Brunch at Jack’s Wife Freda in NYC

Today, I’m going to recap a brunch in New York City that I enjoyed. I have been seeing Jack’s Wife Freda on social media for months and decided to try it out since Mediterranean brunch is my favorite subcategory of brunch cuisines. It’s nostalgic and comforting as my parents exposed me to this cuisine growing up after they both lived in the Middle East.

Jack’s Wife Freda

A classic blend of American brunch with Mediterranean flair. The breakfast menu here is simplified but sure to delight. I ordered a Mediterranean style breakfast. This came with 2 eggs any style (I opted for scrambled with cheese), pita, chopped salad, avocado, labneh (a strained soft cheese) and a mint chutney. Along with this we ordered grilled haloumi (a semi-hard unripened brined cheese) which was served with grapes and basil. A baguette with butter and jam paired with fresh cantaloupe juice was enjoyed to finish the meal. Overall, its a light brunch with photo worthy moments although it can be a little loud at peak times. I will say Suraya in Philadelphia is light years ahead culinary wise as far as authentic Mediterranean brunch goes.

Dominique Ansel Bakery

Dominique Ansel pioneered the famous cronut (a croissant doughnut) that drew lines out the door at one point.Even pop culture referenced the famous invention. The DKA is another favorite which is Dominique’s twist on the kouign amann pastry. This is a croissant with sugar caramelized into it. A good tip if you like it soft is to pop it in the toaster oven for 30-60 seconds on low. Their spinach and gruyere quiche is an honorable mention if you are also looking for savory eats.

Shopping in SOHO/Broadway

After all this eating, a walk is necessary. Shopping in SoHo and Broadway can do just that. The Aritzia store in particular is absolutely gorgeous and worth a visit. There is a giant sculpture near the fitting rooms and the store is well organized and curated with their various brands. There are plenty of other major stores in the area, coupled with boutiques to help walk off your morning meal.
