I'm falling in love...

with myself.

That is right. At the end of the day, she will never leave me and she is all I will need.

The past four months have been a journey filled with highs and so many lows that it felt like 2019 had it out for me. I felt unfulfilled, empty and restless. The depression has dwindled but it didn’t leave me unscathed. There comes a moment when you just wake up and ask yourself what exactly it is you’re doing. I didn’t like the answer and went into some much needed self-reflection. Now, I think I have the answers and I want to thank all my friends and family for really becoming that patient support system that I needed once again.

I’ve realized that I really need to spend time with myself and truly learn to fall in love with myself. I spent so much time avoiding being alone and seeking distractions to keep me from facing reality. Well, now it is time to face things head on as the brave, confident and capable woman I am. I need to truly love myself and take that time to do so. I’m tired of giving myself to others who don’t deserve it. Life is too short to be wasting time on others when you can spend that time nurturing yourself. By nourishing myself, I will be able to share the best parts of me with my family, friends and the kind souls I meet along the way. I don’t want to give them this empty shell. I deserve more. They deserve more.

How Can You Fall In Love with Yourself Each Day?

Take Time to Understand Who You Are and Practice Self-Love

Are you a morning person? A night-owl? What do you like to do in your free-time?

Cultivate your passions. Practice gratitude. Stop comparing yourself to others. Let go of the past. Take care of your body and mind. Learn to say no to yourself and others. Truly learn to be your own best friend. Stop looking for love and validation externally.

All these bits and pieces will help shape your self-image and get better acquainted with yourself. Once you understand yourself, you will not lose yourself to anyone. You will be firm in your convictions and will not let others overstep boundaries. Plus, you will be working on improving yourself and becoming the best version of yourself to date sans distractions. You will feel rejuvenated, inspired and full of love. There will actually be something to give others without depleting your reserves: joy and love in the purest form.

Seva to Bring About Joy and Reduce Depression

In Sikhism, we conduct acts of seva which means selfless service in Punjabi. Seva is done without expectations of anything in return. In helping others, we are able to dissolve barriers and share moments of happiness and joy. Our joy as a result can increase as we share joy with others. Seva has been said to reduce anxiety and depression and can even lead to more fulfillment. It is altruism at the end of the day.

Seva can be done in simple ways. It starts with helping someone in need, making someone a meal, lending an ear or even being there for someone and so on. The compassion that you generate will help create unity and oneness. This overall will help you connect to others and gain perspective. It won’t solve your issues but it is a beautiful act in itself.

Take Responsibility for Your Happiness

You are the creator of your world. Don’t be so passive and make things happen for yourself. Set attainable goals and achieve them. This will boost your morale and fulfillment. Where there is happiness, there is success.

If you’re unhappy, change it. Find ways to improve your situation bit by bit. Actively choose to be happy. Yes, happiness is a choice. Surround yourself with positive people, environments and thoughts. You can find little things to be grateful for even when life seems terrible. As tough as this sounds, it gets easier with practice. Trust me.

Lastly, develop quality friendships. Truly build a support system and you will increase your well-being drastically. Sometimes you need a pick me up and having that friend who understands you and genuinely wishes you the best is life-changing.

So now I will continue my journey doing things that I truly love, working on bettering myself even more, giving selflessly and just living life to the fullest. My advice is not to leave any stone unturned and experience everything unhindered. I hope this post inspires you to fall in love with yourself even more.
